About Galloping Goose at Viaduct Flats
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail is one of Greater Victoria's most popular multi-use trails, stretching 55 km from Victoria to Sooke. The Viaduct Flats section runs along the Gorge Waterway in central Victoria, offering a scenic waterfront stretch where dogs can walk alongside the water and even splash in the shallows.
While this is not a traditional beach destination, it provides an excellent option for dog owners who want to combine a trail walk with waterfront access. The flat, paved trail is perfect for all ages and abilities, and the Gorge Waterway offers calm, sheltered water for dogs who love to wade.

- Bylaw officers actively patrol the trail. Fines for off-leash violations: $100 to $150.

Best Times to Visit

The trail is busier but the community atmosphere is wonderful. Dogs on leashes everywhere create a social, friendly environment.
Water Quality & Safety
The Gorge Waterway is a tidal saltwater inlet with generally good water quality. The waterway connects to the Inner Harbour and receives tidal flushing. Blue-green algae advisories are rare in the Gorge but can occur during extended warm, still periods.
Good to know: The Gorge Waterway has had occasional water quality advisories after heavy rainfall events. If your dog drinks from the water, watch for the City of Victoria's water quality notices. The water at the shoreline is generally safe for wading.
Tips from the Happy Homes Team - Keep your dog on a short leash near the water's edge, the trail is shared with cyclists who move fast.
- The Selkirk Trestle is a beautiful photo spot. Great backdrop for a dog portrait with the waterway behind.
- Extend your walk to the Selkirk Trestle and beyond, the trail continues through some of Victoria's most scenic urban waterfront.
- Check for any temporary trail closures due to maintenance or events before you head out.
