Thetis Lake
Beach & Trails
A favourite freshwater swimming lake with 6 km of forest trails circling two lakes through second-growth forest. The beach swimming area enforces leash rules during peak season.
About Thetis Lake
Thetis Lake Regional Park is a beloved freshwater escape in View Royal, just minutes from downtown Victoria. The park features Upper and Lower Thetis Lakes connected by forested trails that loop approximately 6 km through second-growth Douglas fir and cedar forest. The main beach area on Lower Thetis Lake is a popular swimming spot, one of the few freshwater beaches in the Greater Victoria area.
Dogs are welcome on the trails and there is a designated area where dogs can enjoy the water. The park is a favourite for trail walks any time of year, but the beach swimming area has seasonal leash rules and periodic water quality advisories.
Blue-Green Algae Advisory
Thetis Lake has recurring blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) advisories. The Capital Regional District, in consultation with Island Health, issues advisories when harmful algae blooms are detected, typically during the warmer summer months.
- Do not let your dog drink, swim in, or wade in affected water.
- Keep dogs on leash near the water during active advisories.
- Blue-green algae toxins can cause serious illness in dogs, including liver damage and neurological symptoms.
Always check the CRD website or Island Health advisories before visiting Thetis Lake with your dog.
Off-Leash Rules
- Dogs are allowed in the park on-leash. Off-leash areas on trails are designated in certain zones, follow posted signage.
- The beach swimming area enforces leash rules during peak summer season. Dogs may not be allowed on the main beach during busy periods.
- Check CRD Parks for current rules before your visit, as seasonal adjustments are common.
Entry Points & Parking
Main parking lot: Free parking at the Thetis Lake main entrance off Tatlow Avenue. Moderate-sized lot that fills on summer weekends. Overflow street parking is available on nearby residential streets.
Trail access: From the main lot, a short path leads to the beach and the trailhead for the 6 km loop. The trail is well-maintained with some elevation changes. A secondary access point exists off Island Highway.
Amenities: Washrooms and a water fountain at the main beach area. Waste bins along the trail. Picnic tables near the beach.
Best Times to Visit
The trails and beach are quiet. Perfect for a peaceful loop walk with your dog before the crowds arrive.
The forest trails are stunning in autumn with golden leaves reflected in the lake. Spring brings lush green growth and fewer visitors. Algae risk is lowest in cooler months.
Water Quality & Safety
Thetis Lake is a freshwater lake and is particularly susceptible to blue-green algae blooms during warm, dry summer periods. The CRD issues advisories when toxins are detected, and these can remain in effect for weeks.
Unlike marine beaches with strong tidal circulation, the lake's enclosed water body retains nutrients that feed algae growth. Advisories have been issued in multiple recent summers (2024, 2025, 2026).
Always check before you go: Visit the CRD website or check Island Health advisories for the latest blue-green algae status at Thetis Lake. The risk is highest from June through September.
Tips from the Happy Homes Team - Always check for blue-green algae advisories before visiting. Never let your dog drink from the lake during an advisory.
- Bring fresh water and a portable bowl for your dog, even when the lake looks clean, it may not be safe.
- The 6 km loop trail is excellent exercise but has some elevation. Start early on warm days.
- If the main beach is crowded, try the West Beach area (sometimes called Dog Beach) for a quieter experience.
