Sandcut Beach
Metchosin
Wild, rugged coastline on the west side with dramatic sandstone cliffs, natural waterfalls, and year-round off-leash access along approximately 1.5 km of beach.
About Sandcut Beach
Sandcut Beach is one of the most dramatic and photogenic dog beaches in Greater Victoria. Located off West Coast Road near Metchosin, the beach features towering sandstone cliffs, natural waterfalls that cascade directly onto the cobble beach, and tide pools teeming with marine life. It offers a strikingly different experience from the Inner Harbour beaches, wild, rugged, and untamed.
Dogs can explore the full 1.5 km stretch of coastline, scrambling over driftwood, splashing in tide pools, and feeling the ocean breeze. The beach faces the open Pacific, so expect bigger waves and a more exposed feel than sheltered harbour beaches.
Off-Leash Rules
- Dogs are allowed off-leash on the beach year-round. The beach is part of the CRD regional park system.
- Dogs must be on-leash on the forest trail leading to the beach. Leash up before you hit the trailhead.
- Always follow CRD Parks signage. Trail-specific rules may change seasonally.
Entry Points & Parking
Parking: Small parking area off West Coast Road. Limited spaces, expect to find street parking if the lot is full on busy days.
Trail access: From the parking lot, follow a forested trail approximately 1 km to the beach. The trail is flat to gently downhill through second-growth forest. A pit toilet is available at the trailhead.
No amenities at the beach: No water fountains, waste bins, or washrooms at the beach itself. Bring everything you need.
Best Times to Visit
The quietest time. You may have the entire beach to yourself. Morning light on the sandstone cliffs is stunning.
Check tide tables, low tide reveals the best tide pools and widest beach area. Avoid visiting at high tide when the cobble beach narrows significantly.
Water Quality & Safety
Sandcut Beach faces the open Pacific Ocean with excellent water circulation, making it free from blue-green algae concerns. The water is colder than harbour beaches, expect a brisk Pacific experience.
Terrain warning: The beach is rocky with uneven cobble and sandstone. Best suited for active dogs with sturdy paws. Avoid cliff edges, sandstone can be unstable. Check conditions before visiting after heavy rain.
Tips from the Happy Homes Team - Check the tide table before you go. Low tide gives you the most beach to explore and the best tide pools.
- Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet, the trail can be muddy after rain.
- The natural waterfall at the south end is a highlight. Dogs love playing in the freshwater cascade.
- Combine with a drive along West Coast Road, the Metchosin countryside is beautiful any time of year.
