Can I Take My Dog Swimming at Matheson Lake in Metchosin?

Matheson Lake with your dog:
Yes, you can take your dog swimming at Matheson Lake, and right now is actually the best time of the year for it. The CRD keeps dogs off the main beach from June 1 to September 15 each summer, and that window closed this week. From mid-September on, your dog can swim from the sand again, and the lake is far quieter than it was in August.
Matheson Lake Regional Park sits in Metchosin, about twenty-five minutes west of downtown Victoria off Rocky Point Road. It is the kind of lake we drive to on warm fall afternoons with Ziggy when we want a real swim instead of a puddle splash. The water is fresh, the loop trail is forgiving, and the crowds have thinned out for the season.
What are the dog rules at Matheson Lake?
The short version: dogs are welcome, but the whole park is on-leash. Matheson Lake has no designated off-leash areas, so the CRD's default rule applies, leash your dog on the trails and keep it under control near the water. That is the polite version of the rule, and it is also the legal one.
The one seasonal twist is the beach. From June 1 to September 15, dogs are not allowed on the main designated beach, apart from a quick leashed pass-through without stopping. The ban keeps the swimming area clean and gives nesting and migratory shorebirds a quiet stretch of sand. Once September 15 passes, the prohibition lifts and dogs can be on the beach and swim from it like anyone else.
Where exactly can my dog swim at Matheson Lake?
In the open season, which includes right now, the main beach is fine for a dog swim. It has a gradual drop-off, and the water stays cool without being cold by September standards. If you come earlier in the summer, pick a shoreline spot away from the designated beach instead, always on leash, and skip areas where swimmers are concentrated.
One habit worth keeping all year: glance at the information kiosk at the parking lot before you let your dog in the water. The CRD posts algae advisories at lakes when blooms show up, and if there is a warning, the swim is off. We treat that as a hard rule, no exceptions, because a quick float is not worth a sick dog.
What is the walk like around the lake?
The loop trail hugs the shoreline through Douglas fir and arbutus, with roots and gentle climbs in places. It is a proper trail, not a paved path, so grippy shoes (and a dog who does not mind a little mud after rain) are the right call. On a weekday in late September you may have long stretches entirely to yourself.
The trail network also connects toward Roche Cove and, from there, the Galloping Goose, so you can stretch a visit into a longer outing. For a shorter, easier option, park, do a half loop, and let your dog earn the swim at the end. That is our standard move: walk first, swim second, dry off on the drive home.
Is Matheson Lake worth the drive from Victoria with a dog?
For a real swim in a real lake, yes. Elk and Beaver Lake are closer to town but busier, and Thetis Lake gets just as popular on fair days. Matheson sits far enough out that it keeps a quieter character, and the Metchosin drive itself is pleasant. Sandcut and the coast are lovely, but a warm lake swim is a different experience, and this is the best on-leash lake option in the southwest corner of the region.
If your dog is more of a beach dog than a lake dog, our dog-friendly beaches guide covers the ocean options, and the gentle ocean swimming guide flags where the water is calm enough for a nervous swimmer.
What is it like to live in Metchosin with a dog?
This is the part I actually get paid to think about. Metchosin lots are big, which means real fenced yards, and the pace of life is quiet enough that a dog who barks at the occasional deer is not a neighbourhood problem. The trade-off is that you drive for most amenities, and rural fencing, water, and septic all add up when you buy.
If a lake like Matheson five minutes from your back door sounds like the whole point, that is a Metchosin or East Sooke property conversation. If you would rather walk to a beach every day, that is an Oak Bay or Fairfield conversation. Our neighbourhood guides rank the options by walkability and off-leash access, and our Sooke guide covers the West Shore side of the same lifestyle.

Common questions about Matheson Lake and dogs
Can my dog swim at Matheson Lake in September 2026?
Yes. The CRD beach ban runs from June 1 to September 15, so from September 16 onward your dog can be on the main beach and swim from it, on leash and under control. That is the window we are in right now.
Is Matheson Lake an off-leash park?
No. There are no off-leash areas at Matheson Lake Regional Park. Dogs must be leashed on the trails and under control at the water, per CRD rules.
Is the water at Matheson Lake safe for dogs?
Check the kiosk at the parking lot for posted algae advisories before letting your dog swim, and skip the water if it looks like a bloom. When no advisory is posted, the lake is generally a good swim spot.
How do I reach the Matheson Lake parking lot?
The main parking lot is a short drive off Rocky Point Road in Metchosin, about twenty-five minutes from downtown Victoria. It fills early on hot summer weekends, but in the fall you will find space easily.
The best swim spot is the one you can reach without a plan. A house near Matheson Lake, or with a big fenced Metchosin yard, turns a weekend drive into an after-work routine. Check our neighbourhood guides or book a call with the Happy Homes Team, and let us find you a home your dog can swim home from.
