There's a new Meetup group for Jack Russell owners to bring their pets to a park in North Saanich and let them play together. Anyone with a Jack can join.
The idea is to be off leash so the dogs must be sociable. Check it out and spread the word!

Friday night talk (May 4) — Your Dog, The Missing Manual
This two-hour talk will look at some popular techniques for working with dogs that can backfire and sometimes even make behaviour problems worse. Sarah exposes some common myths and explains how dogs think, learn and perceive their world. This is the foundation for understanding behaviour modification techniques that can create happier and better-behaved pets. It’s like having an instruction manual and may change forever the way you relate to your dog.
Tickets $20 in advance through Pets West (Broadmead Village), online at www.citizencanine.org or at the door.
Saturday May 5 9:00 to 5:00 – Understanding Canine Communication and Behaviour
Sarah presents clear videos showing us how dogs communicate using a variety of signals, some subtle and some overt, that we often misread or fail to recognize. This day covers body language and cues that are used by dogs of different breeds in a variety of situations, with other dogs and with people. You’ll learn how to improve your everyday interactions with dogs and also how modifying your body language can affect your dog’s behaviour. This day will be of value to anyone who lives or works with dogs.
Saturday fee is $100 and includes lunch.
Sunday May 6 9:00 to 5:00 – Diagnosing and Treating Canine Behaviour Problems
This day is aimed mainly at people who work with dogs across a wide range of fields, from dog walkers and groomers through trainers, to workers in shelters or veterinary settings. The focus is on assessment and behaviour modification, and will also include development of aggression in puppies. Different behaviour issues will be looked at in a variety of video case studies, which may include leash reactivity, resource guarding, fear aggression, and dominance. Pet dog owners who want to dig deeper into their dog’s psyche will also find this day of interest.
Sunday fee is $140 and includes lunch.
Register for Saturday and Sunday together for $220.
To register for the Saturday and Sunday seminars, please go to www.citizencanine.org and download the registration form and mail it with your cheque.

A WALK FOR CRUELTY-FREE CURES will take place 2 pm on Saturday April 28th, during WORLDWIDE LABORATORY ANIMAL WEEK. Parallel walks are being planned in Vancouver, Kamloops and the Yukon. Many charity walks and marathons raise money for disease research, but all are essentially raising funds to help pharmaceutical companies test their lucrative drug products on lonely, suffering, pain-wracked animals in labs carefully hidden away from public scrutiny. Our walk, by contrast, is meant to raise money for the alternatives, and also to raise awareness about the issue through a polite, non-confrontational activity – a short healthy walk along the waterfront ending in a picnic at Clover Point. Each walker need only bring a toonie to participate (and a toonie from as many sponsors as you can get for your walk– contact me for a sponsor form). We hope lots of dog-walkers will come so that their dogs can turn out for their cousins with no kind human companion – the unlucky lab dogs who are nobody's pet and live in an isolated often empty cage being sickened by overdoses of drugs, pesticides and chemical products, and enduring invasive procedures and stress and pain studies.
Dogs under the age of 4 months are welcome. Cost is by donation with proceeds going to the Sooke Dog Park. Socialization is important for puppies. Here's a chance to meet other puppy owners while watching puppies play. Please contact Jacklyn at It's Over Rover Dog Training ( itsoverrover@shaw.ca) if you'd like to attend!
